The British Government is calling on logistics companies to bid for a £25 million contract to run express freight containers carrying daily shipments of medicines into the UK after the Brexit deadline on 31 October.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said the contract would form part of the UK’s contingency plans to deal with complications associated with Britain’s departure from the EU.

The service will deliver small shipments of medicines and medical products on a 24 hour basis, with an additional service run every two to four days for larger shipments of drugs.

The Minister of State for Health, Chris Skidmore, said: “I want to ensure that when we leave the EU at the end of October, all appropriate steps have been taken to ensure frontline services are fully prepared.”

The contract will initially run for 12 months, with the possibility of being extended for an additional year.
